how to cook long grain rice

This is an old school cooking tip. On how to cook long grain rice. So in this post there is no rice cooker or electric steamer involved. Just use a saucepan and a stove or outside grill

2 (out of 3)






  1. 1 cup of long grain rice (Jasmin, Pandan)
  2. 2 cups of water


  • spoon
  • Pan
  • Sieve
  • Lid or plate
  • Timer


  1. Do not wash rice
  2. Add water to pan
  3. Turn on heat, or move pan close to the center of the heat
  4. As soon as water is boiling, add rice
  5. Close pan with lid
  6. Wait until you hear water boiling again
  7. Carefully give cooking water & rice a stir
  8. Lower the heat or remove pan from the center of the heat
  9. Close pan with lid again
  10. Time your phone for 7 minutes
  11. Let water & rice simmer for the named period
  12. Pick a few rice grains
  13. Check their bite
    1. When their texture is firm but cooked
    2. In case, you can not chew the picked rice grains, let the rice grains cook for another 2 minutes
  14. Pour water and rice into colander or sieve
  15. Wash rice in sieve or colander
  16. Until water is clear
  17. Let rice rest in sieve on top of pan
  18. With lid on
